We’ve all had that moment when you’re talking to someone, and you notice that you’ve been staring at them for too long.
Or maybe the opposite has happened to you; when you’re talking to someone and notice that they’ve been staring at you for a little longer than ”the normal amount”.
However, making NO eye contact can be considered equally rude and/or creepy!
So here’s the answer to this golden question!
There isn’t one solution.… There are many.
Westerner’s love eye contact. We see it as a sign of respect. In our culture, strong eye contact is associated to qualities of leadership and strength.
However, in certain countries, eye contact can be considered rude; even to the point of being disrespectful.
According to THIS post by Inc, the best length to maintain eye contact seems to be
3-5 seconds in a group of people,
and 7-10 seconds in 1-on-1 conversations.
So next time you think you might be holding eye contact for too long, remember, a quick glance doesn’t hurt!
